The method used depends on the likely duration of enteral feeding and the patient’s condition. The food can be administered by :
nasal tube: nasogastric (the tube enters the stomach), nasoduodenal (the tube enters the duodenum) or nasojejunal (the tube enters the jejunum)
stoma: a tube is inserted through the abdominal wall directly into the stomach (gastrostomy) or into the intestine (jejunostomy).
The enteral feed pouch (or bottle) is then connected to the tube through which the product flows, either by gravity (the pouch is hung on a drip stand) or with the use of a flow regulator pump. Feeding may or may not be continuous.
